How do group stereotypes affect the self-esteem and performance of individuals belonging to that group?

Answer:
it's pretty well documented that groups & individuals will only perform to the expected levels. so, that means that if you expect a group of people to perform poorly on a task & set your expectations low, that is exactly what they will achieve. the reverse will also hold true, if you expect a group to perform WELL & to work hard, they will rize to that standard.
I think it depends which group you were in. If it was a positive one like popular, jock etc it makes you feel good and gives you confidence that you might not have otherwise (I've been there). But if it's negative then obviously you feel bad because you start agreeing with them and thinking about it all the time. And everyone belongs to a stereotype whether they believe it or not because it's human nature.
