Do you ever find yourself purposelt not looking at someone who looks different, such as a "little person"

or someone who has cerebral palsy or is very obese, or maybe they have scars on their face? I know it's a bad habit but I find that sometimes I will do this. I know it's ignorant but I guess at the time I figure that someone such as this is used to being stared at, and I don't want to make them think I'm staring . It actually irritates me when I see someone gawking at another person like they're some kind of a freak. I know sometimes people are just curious but at a certain point..it's like come on now! It's sort of an unconscious habit I developed after working with people with various disabilities . It is different when I know the person though. My husband and I have 2 friends that both use a wheelchair to get around and I know that I do not treat them different than I would anyone else. What do you think? How can I stop doing this?

Answer:
You can overcome it with practice. I have. It helps to see the person, smile at them, and look them in the eye, once you have that eye-contact connection it is much easier to see the person as an individual, not a chair or a deformity.
i do avoid looking, because if i did look, it would make me a bad person. so i dont look at all, for fear of offending anyone. what else can you do?
i have children, and once in the supermarket there was a person with severe deformaties. while i looked anywhere but at the person, my 3 year old asked loudly, "mom, what happened to his face?"
what am i supposed to do? i don want the person to get upset if my kids ask him/her to their face, but that is what i tell them to do anyway. they have never done it
Yes, it's ingrained from my mother telling me not to stare at people who are different.
