What is appreciation? in what sense can we say that every perception is an appreciation?
Answer:
Perception is only the brain's ability to accept and recognize data. If the data is not perceived then it cannot be processed at all, let alone appreciated.
However, "appreciation" I believe may fall under the philosophy of aesthetics. Aesthetic theory says that if something is pleasurable (as a whole...not just as a matter of instant gratification) then it is therefore ethical. Hence, a rainbow could be considered something to appreciate because it can be perceived and it's colors are pleasing and do no harm (making it very ethical to enjoy rainbows.) However, the effects of heroin may seem initially pleasing to an individual, the effects produced by it's circumstances (disease, social disruption, death, war) are not pleasant and aesthetic, so heroin is not something to appreciate and could be termed as being immoral or unethical, regardless of the fact that it definitely causes physical sensation!
..Appreciation is feeling joy or gladness for something. Every perception is not necessarily an appreciation, but it should be!
We should value what is around us, take in our perceptions so that we experience them fully and glory in them...appreciate them. This is the proper way to perceive something.
Alas, most people don't understand that their lives could end on any given day. So they don't treasure their every perception. Hopefully they do occasionally, anyway, when the perception of something really wonderful surprises them...such as having a hummingbird fly up to your face and wonder if you are a flower.
I think that not all perceptions are viewed as appreciations...
