Why does this happen to my family??

okay my family has a creepy tradition(or what ever you call it)...
one night I had a nightmare for the very first time and i woke up scared as hell. I told my mom this shes like well "what was your posture?". I was remebering how i woke up and I told her " well i was sleeping on my back and my hand on my chest, beacuse of my iPod " then she said that was it. She told me that our family members cant sleep with our hands on our hearts or we get nightmares. So I go to sleep that night. I was reading a book(nothing scary) and i have a nightmare actually the sequal to my first nightmare... I woke up teary,I realized i was crying in my sleep and I woke up with my hand on my heart... accidently. so I have to be careful now to not do this. Does anyone have a tradition(or whatever) like this?

Answer:
I'm more likely to have nightmares when I sleep on my back. Not sure why. It never had anything to do with where my hand was. But If I am sick, in pain or am sleeping in an awkward position that is causing pain, I tend to have nightmares or vivid dreams. I can't see why it would be because your hand is on your heart.
well i get tears in my eye when i wake up and that is because u dont cry enough so tears fall out or it can be that u r having nightmares that someone is dying but to help u dont sleep on ur back sleep on ur side.

or it is because u felt like u were being sufficated and that is y u held ur chest and were crying.
Sorry, never heard anything like this, but it is interesting.
However, when I was a kid, if I lay on my back, I would have one type of dream; if I rolled onto my left side, a different type of dream, and so on. There were no TV's back then, but it was like changing channels by changing positions.
I find your story interesting and wonder if it applies to everyone, or just to your family?
Give your mom full credit for a sense of humor, but don't take her seriously. She was trying to jolly you out of your fear and minimize the negative effect of the dream by getting you to attribute it to a physical reason. The problem is you are too suggestible, Now if that isn't the case, maybe it was her mom that tried the strategy on her, and she too believed it. Now for a question to you. You sleep with your iPod over your heart?
no i dont
but
read the book again and have the ipod and
tie ur hands behind ur back next time and see what happens
I don't think I would call this a tradition.. maybe an old wives tale or a family urban legend. A tradion would be more like "my family always has pie on Sundays"
Most likely it happens to your family through the power of suggestion.. I say that because if you had never told your mother about your dream, she probably would never have told you about the so called tradition. Personally I don't think there is any validity to it. Remember, your subconcious mind is what controls your body when you sleep. It is programmed by your concious mind. When you put thoughts in the subconcious mind it can become ingrained and embedded in your psychic. You can believe what you want.. but unless you dispell the notion that it is a faimly trait then you will probably experience it on occasion and eventually you will come to believe that it is a tradition.. the question for you is..are you going to accept it or dispell it?
