Answer:
Among the more conservative circles of Christianity, there tends to be a strong prejudice against psychology and its theories. Many Christians, especially the really conservative ones, believe that psychology is dangerous to the Christian faith. Psychology, particularly psychotherapy, is often focused on helping people to find their worth, to learn to respect and love and accept themselves as they are. Some Christians believe this is a dangerous approach to take to life, because they believe if a person is not constantly wallowing in a knowledge of his own sin, then he is in danger of losing his salvation by becoming too carefree and losing his focus on Christ. In other words, they think that if you don't constantly think of yourself as a dirty, rotten sinner, then you will forget that you need Jesus as Savior. Hence, a lot of Christians see psychology's focus on building self-esteem to be dangerous.
Other Christians believe that, if you are a strong enough Christian, and if you are truly believing in God and trusting his Word enough, then you shouldn't need psychology (or psychotherapy) to make you feel better. God will magically fix all of your problems if you just spend enough time with him by praying and reading the Bible. To experience anything like depression or anxiety (and to need counseling as a result) is a sign (to them) that the Christian has fallen away from the faith and is simply not trying hard enough "to get right with God." What these people fail to realize is that God has created us to be relational beings. He's designed us to need other people, and he often communicates with us through other people. It's not wrong for a person to need to seek out help from others; and it's not wrong for a Christian to need counseling. God can use many different ways to heal us, including psychotherapy and counseling.
There are MANY other flaws that Christians often find with psychology. Some of them are legitimate; some are not. The best thing you can do is to examine both sides carefully in the light of the Bible. Remember, your pastor is just a human himself; he can be wrong too!
He is saying that the Bible is 100% right and psychology is not. If you have read the entire Bible and are mentally sound, you will come to the conclusion that the Bible is full of insanity.
you're pastor just wants your money
He may be discussing something from philosophy of science. Which is subject that discuss what is science and what isn't. What is pseudo-science, what makes scientific theory valid...etc...etc.
Maybe he's saying that he doesn't believe in psychological theories? The problem with psychology is that it really cannot incorporate spiritual theories...spirituality is something that cannot be objectively studied. Psychological studies rely upon what can be empirically tested (that is, what is measurable, objective, definable, testable)- and ideas about spirituality are subjective (meaning they are extremely difficult to test empirically)...
That's not to say that psychology cannot be of any value to a religious person. What has been tested, objectively, has proven to be of value to all people, if they are open minded enough to accept what has been proven by science.
Don't you think it is better you discuss this with someone who heard the message or with your fellowship.
I truly can't give you a concrete answer. I don't know your church and pastor..etc..
I'm devoted Christian and psychologist. I agree that there are many theories are from atheist point of views. We can't rely on 100% to atheist view on how the brain works and relate to the Bible.
But, I also believe human are far to comprehend how God formed our brain and need tools to understand our body and mind to achieve better being.
Note, Science is far from working/believing on spiritual livings. When they can co-work to know God. I don't mean Christian science, that is another topic on cults.
We have to have knowledge to discern as Philippians 1:9-11 warns us. (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?sea... )
....
God gave us freedom, but also gave warning about evil. Falling on to traps of evil, we stop trusting God, do things against God's will, and etc.
Psychology is so far to meet the knowledge of life and personal needs. It is just a tool made by man to understand our brain function, generally. Not all tool are necessary and useful. Many of those tools mix into what is useful, when it purpose is harmful or inappropriate. It is like those inventor from the program "the next greatest inventor." There are people coming up with so many stuffs incredibly useless.
Ordinary thing can't serve high purpose.
Your pastor is saying that science is wrong and that the bible is right.
I know that Pinoy religion is very devout, so he's probably trying to scare you into all into complying with the Church's instructions, and not questioning what he says.
I bet he implied that if you question the bible you will be 'walang hiya'?
