How can industrial/organizational psychologist instill the necessary motivation and skills in workers?
to maintain flexibility in a modern organization?
this is for a Organizational psychology class
Answer:
Cross-train employees in various jobs to provide flexibility. Seek out relevant training to keep employees up to date on critical developments in the field. Do weekly 'best employee' or 'most improved employee' contests. Do monthly employee appreciation celebrations for the various departments. Distribute a questionaire asking about employee satisfaction and get feedback on how things can be improved.
I have taught motivational counseling to some of the people of a well known company as an assistant manager, these people were going to be fired from lack of several different misdeminors... but I wanted to try something new...So they gave me one week to make or break these slackards...two of them I fired...but one boy named Mike was a great kid, lots of potential but the wrong priorities...he always came in late, his till was always off and he was lazy...so I sat him down and asked him the question:
Who are you working for?
he said the name of the company.
I said..nope, try again...
who are you working for?
after a few very strange answers...I told him what is the main motivation to any employee anywhere in any job...You are working for you..
it seems you may be working for someone else but you are working for yourself! you are answering only to yourself...you are your ultimate boss. You face the mirror in the morning and you feel good or bad about how you did your job..NO one else...look at the reasons behind what you are doing and if it is not motivational to you in any way...you are in the wrong job! This is why I fired one girl..she was punishing herself with this job..making it non benificial for anyone...I told her to find out what you love to do and go for it. Then you will always be a success...she became a cosmotoligist and has her own shop now...sometimes the best thing to do for someone is fire them, the other girl became a store clerk elsewhere and got fired there too...she didnt want to get it.. With Mike he saw the light and became the top supervisor for the company and is still with them, teaching the kids that are like he was...and is top in his field!
Clarify WHY they are working in the first place and what are the rewards of working and who gets them...this is always a motivation to people.hope it helps
