Autism, how can I recognize a person that has that?
Answer:
Symptoms of autism occur in various combinations, from mild to severe.... Young children with autism usually have impaired language development. They often have difficulty expressing needs (i.e., use gestures instead of words) and may laugh, cry, or show distress for unknown reasons
Appears indifferent to surroundings
Appears content to be alone, happier to play alone
Displays lack of interest in toys
Displays lack of response to others
Does not point out objects of interest to others (called protodeclarative pointing)
Marked reduction or increase in activity level
Resists cuddling
Fixations on particular things, autistic people often have a subject which they know an awful lot about and will talk about it without realising it annoys other people, lack of social skills, takes sayings or phrases literally and is unable to read between the lines. Often perfectionists, will spend a long time getting something perfect, tantrums in children, naive about many aspects of life, sees things as how they are and will not candy coat anything - if you ask someone with autism if you look fat they will tell you the truth! Children with autism can be generally naughty because they find it hard to apply themselves to social situations and can become easily overwhelmed. They are just a few basic things to look out for! My mum works with people suffering from autism so let me know if you want to know more.
One of the main things with autism is that sufferers cannot understand or distinguish emotion. Often if you reprimand an autistic child, it will show no sign that it has been told off, whereas non-autistic children would cry, or look guilty etc. As well as this, you find people with autism will look at something rather than someone, and it is very difficult to get eye contact at all, and just as hard to maintain that eye contact. Autism can still be rather tricky to spot no matter how severe the condition is, because most people learn to live with it. I have an autistic friend but you would not guess at all that she has autism because she has adapted to understand people's tones by what they say rather than how they say it. I hope this helps you out. Rach
