Is selective amnesia really effective to forget something painful in the past?

psychology
amnesia

Answer:
It is in the short-term but I believe ultimately painful experiences need to be confronted and dealt with in order to move on. The human Psyche is necessarily very good at deeply burying trauma and it can often take an experienced professional to recover painful memories. We deal with things when we are ready and able if we so choose.
I believe some say it's due to a person bottling in their stresses and emotions. Then once something catastrophic happens, selective amnesia occurs.
