Celebrity Fetish? Serious Question.?

Why is it that Americans feel compelled to read, watch and gossip about celebrities and the otherwise rich and famous? I mean, "Lindsey Lohan in Rehab Again" is NOT breaking news. If someone shot her in the face and she bled to death, it still would have NO impact whatsoever on anyone's life in the end (except family and friends).

Don't people have enough to worry about in their own lives that to gawk over these people's pathetic, miserable drama?

What psychological explanation is ther for this phenomina?

Answer:
i tried to figure this out many times. i sometimes am watching tv and watch a bit of E! and im amased on how vain these people are and in no way i d like to be them. i am totally not intrested in where the hang out how much they spent on their dress and who they ve been snogging this weekend. these ppl are just like anyone else just with an undeserving fatter pocket, a bit more vain, a bit more immoral and a bit more stupid than anyone else out there.
btw this celebrity fetish is not natural to any of us common ppl but magazines newspapers and tv progs have learnt to make comoners believe that they cannot miss out and that knowing what brand some celibrity was wearing is as crucial as having food on the dinner table.
celebrity fetish is profitable to MANY
I don't know if this is a "psychological" explanation, but I think it's just because some people are just fascinated by celebrities. I think everyone would like to be rich and know what it's like to be a celebrity. By reading and watching these stories in the news, it gives people a chance to view the more personal lives of celebrities, to get to "know" them on a different level.
some people do it to know that their life is better than someone who is rich .. I know it make me feel better
