Can genius be achieved?
I'm 18 and have an IQ of 125, though I'd like to hit the 160 threshold before I'm 30. Is this possible? Will taking up hobbies such as Sudoku and chess help?
I know IQ tests only measure relative intelligence, not absolute intelligence; so true "genius" isn't necessarily just having an IQ over 160. I don't know. Whatever.

No. It's a way your mind works, not education. Genius isn't all that, I don't know why that's so hard to understand. Genius is handicapped in many ways..<sigh> whatever, go be a genius.
Nope. It is pretty much set, and may tend to go lower as you age. And Genius is at 150.
It's good to aim to better yourself, but i think trying to higher your IQ is silly... it's just one measure. Reading and doing puzzles certainly exercise your mind. If you go to university, that certainly helps too. You'll be up writing papers all the time (I do). Keep learning more. Genius is rare... you'd know if you were one, but I am sure you're smart enough.
It's true statistically that people in the medical and education fields see an increase in their IQ as they continue their studies, but i think you're expecting much too much a jump up to succeed

Your IQ is a measure of your knowledge, but most importantly your capacity to learn and evaluate information. Doing mind puzzles and things will help, but my 10 year old son currently has an IQ of 145 on the Stanford Benet scale. He is considered extremely gifted. You can't substantially raise your IQ to that extent.
instead of worrying about your IQ so much i would work hard in college and do something useful (like engineering). that is certainly better than solving a Rubik's cube.
sometimes people said to me 'you are a genius' when i came out with a great idea.. i think genius is not to be achieve and not be measure with calculation or ratio.. it will apply naturally if we make really good use of the brain potential.. all god's creations are genius..
unfortunately, as far as i know and logic tells me...intelligence is not something that can be acquired or gained, it can only be developed and nurtured. just think of someone who has talent for music or painting. it is something that comes natural to them , and they can perfection it through practice. however a normal person will never become an accomplished painter by mere practice, for it needs to have that certain 'sparkle'. it is the same with genius. A genius is born genius, what he does as he matures through life is further develop his already existent abilities. you are born with an IQ of 160 which you put to good use by learning and later creating something yourself. Intelligence is a tool which one uses, it is something innate which does not alter through time. you practically have the same amount of intelligence all your life. The information you gain through time does not determine you level of intelligence. Intelligence is measured in different parameters. Such as the capacity to analyze, synthesize, logical reasoning, generalization, language proficiency, visual-spacial intelligence etc.which are concepts independent of the amount of information you have...but its what you can do with the limited knowledge you have. :)

People may be generally born with "genius" (it is genetic, basically), but being a genius does not assure you that you will accomplish anything in life. Many people with supposed potential fail to rise to the occasion while people less talented overachieve their potential. So, the message is, don't sit on your laurels expecting to be given anything. The world does not owe you anything because you were born with talent; it was given to you to share with the world and help get us out of this quagmire.

Although I honestly believe that goals are great to have and to work toward, why not alter your goal slightly? Instead of a number that you may or may not have much influence on, why not make your goal to simply improve yourself every day? Like, find some great self improvement books, and read a minimum of 10 minutes/day? Just having the goal to always be learning (even if it's not learning Sudoku) would be a great goal to have. It does take work to change yourself & improve your weak areas, but it's possible. The IQ test, I'm not sure, maybe it's possible. Just working toward that goal would at least get you closer than if you didn't have the goal.
Yes, you can increase your I.Q by doing crosswords and Sudoku.
Reading widely will also increase it.
However, true genius in something specific to those individuals who have achieved it.
People can be very intelligent and clever but genius is on a different level.

Yes. Definately. I do not equate "genius" with IQ tests. But, my tested IQ advanced from 119 at 14 years old to over 190 when last tested about ten years ago. The more you use your senses and problem-solve, the more "genius" you will become.
