I have lost control of myself if I ever had any...?

Not too long ago I went a psychologist because I couldnt stop having repetitive thoughts... the more I wanted to stop them the more i thought about them. The ugly thoughts went away but obsessing over things is not uncommon for me. It happens all the time and it usually goes away.. but Im in trouble now I started buying by compulsion. I realized that I have a problem when I looked at my closet and I had clothes that I never wear but they're there just because I had the urge to get them. I have all sorts of things.. 4 diff face cleaners, 5diff perfumes all new, among other useless things. I got myself into debt now and i keep burying myself more and more...i cant stop it!! my parents were the same and they had to declare bankruptcy!
what if some day i get obsessed with something worse? what is going to happen to me? i cant control myself! im scared... how can a psychologist help?? i dont want to go back!!

Answer:
Hi Princess... first of all relax. A counselor can help with your obsession. You are exhibiting compulsive behavior and its more common that you think. Continue to see the psychologist to determine why you do this. There is probably some very minor underlying reason why you behave like this. Find out what it is and you can control it. You can't change the reason but you can modify your behavior.
Youve made a great step going to see someone! Keep going and with his/her help you can get better-if you dont see progress there may be meds you need to be on. You need some safety nets in place when you feel like this. Also keeping a journal with you and writing down how you feel when you have the compulsion to buy will help.
It's called Obsessive Compulsive Disorder ( OCD ), go see a doctor, I think there are meds that can treat OCD.

I have it to some extent. When I was little I thought that if I wished something it would come true, so in my mind I would constantly be wishing for bad things to happen, even if I didn't want to wish for it and didn't want it to happen. I couldn't help it. You can't control what your brain thinks and that was one thing I could not control when I was a kid. I was always fighting with myself inside my head. I don't know what happened, it just kinda went away.
I'm not a professional but it seems like you have a serious problem. Shopping/buying serves as some sort of an outlet for you to calm your nerves or reduce stress. I have been in similar situations personally, but had enough restraint when I saw these things getting out of control. It is time to find an alternate path, or something else that satisfies your cravings or pleases you. What else do you like to do? Have you tried anything new? I recently moved out to the west coast for work and found that surfing has been my new fascination. Find a hobby that is less expensive that calms these cravings... Let me know how it works.
absolutely not an expert or even that knowledgeable about your 'problem'..but for whatever this is worth to consider, just by what you have explained about your behavior maybe a good starting point would be to ask yourself why you have to buy...what 'urge' are you satisfying about yourself that by doing this compulsive buying seems to make you feel better about yourself..i get the feeling that so much of compulsive shopping has its basis in the same place as overeating or drinking or too much video games or tv watching...its a way to feel better about ourselves and what we need to start doing to ask what it is that gets satisfied by those choices..maybe that might be a good starting point...addiction is scary. especially when you discover the one for you. but it can be neutralized and stopped. it might just be important to stop and ask yourself 'why?' the next time you go out and see something you suddenly just 'need'...shopping can be an addiction too, i think anyway. it can be difficult to confront but life isnt as dreary as you may think it is - if you stop. life can feel pretty gosh-darn good when you realize you have the self control you wanted to develop within yourself. it's worth the effort and difficulty. i'm no expert but in my own way and my own addiction i know the feeling..that addition Voice of "I NEED" can become a voice you give no credit to and can ignore and let go of. i know. i have...but it can take time. and it aint easy. but it is a real thing that can happen. and does.
