Aspergers Syndrome?
do I go to my family physician about this? can he diagnose this?
who do i need to talk to?
Answer:
First go to your doc and ask him to help you find someone to diagnose your son. You are right its important to get a diagnoses as soon as possible.
My nephew has this. Yes call your doctor and discuss your concerns. He can send you to a specialist that will comfirm or deny the disease. My nephew is actually doign fairly well in school now and gets along a lot better than when he was an infant. He is 7 now and I think hes doing great. Good luck.
Your first stop should be your child's doctor, he can discuss all the reasons you feel your child may have the disease (you shouldn't take your son, he may feel that you are "picking" on him, or that you believe him to be strange). If your doctor and you agree that it is possible then he will refer you to a specialist.
However, if you seriously believe that your child has Aspergers and your doctor disagrees you should ask for a referral any way...after all, you know your child the best.
maybe you have Manchausen Syndrome... but yes, go to his pediatrician if it will make you feel better, they will tell you if you should be concerned and refer him to specialized doctor if he suspects a problem.
go straight to an educational psychologist, good luck!
Yes you can go to you family doc for a referral. If your insurance allows you can go directly to a psychologist, any pediatric psych should be qualified enough, but call around and see if you can find one that specializes in developmental psychology. School psychologists usually have enough training to recognize these types of disorders, but this would be a last resort as they are usually overloaded and underpaid. Recognizing the problem is half the battle. Remember that more often than not people with mild forms of autism can go on to lead normal lives, live on their own, get jobs, fall in love and get married, everything we do. Your son is lucky to have your support, just keep on moving forward and do your best to treat him like you would treat any of your other children and he will adjust.
my little brother has aspergers syndrome I talked for until he was 5 call the docter and ask about it
Okay, some answers and some advice from an aspergers teen here.
First off, yes go see a doctor. Aspergers in many cases is pretty easy to see. My old phycologyst noticed it within the first 5 minutes of meeting me. Best shrink I ever had to.
Now for some other stuff: The idea that your kid may have a mental illness probably freaks you out a little. I'm gonna make a few things about this disorder clear.
1. It is not a form of mental retardation. Kids with this illness can be extremely bright. We're smart, but we just have a different way of thinking, you know?
2. But it's also not something to be taken lightly. I've been to the mental unit 3 times now because of this thing.
So, go see a doctor, and if your kid has it understand they are gonna still be a smart kid, just different. Cool? Cool. God bless.
The family physician is not the right guy. You need a psychologist experienced with aspergers.
I'm an aspie myself. Aspies don't usually have social anxiety or social phobias. Its just that, given a choice, we prefer to be alone. We do tend to be social retards.
Look for things like extreme intolerance to change and physical clumsiness.
