What exactly is the meaning of an emotional or nrevous breakdown?

What are the symptoms..how is it caused?

Answer:
I know cause I've had one

you basically stop living, it takes quite a lot, in my case a total of 24 years of abuse, i just spent so long not wanting to live and not getting the right treatment for clinical depression, that your brain just seems to switch off, you are just waiting and wanting to die, you stop functioning, there are no solid symptoms, it is like a deep depression but worse and goes on for longer, i guess you could say the the symptoms are the same as in depression just to the extreme.

'Nervous breakdown' is a layman's term, used to describe the point when you reach and then pass the end of your tether.

In practical terms, it usually means you are no longer able to cope with the demands of life and you stop even trying"

I don't really know. I would assume these could have many different diagnosis' and symptoms. From what I have experienced. I think it's when your mind can't take any more stress, heartache, etc. Sometimes people who go through this, get upset, irrational, angry, suicidal, etc. Their mind can also take them somewhere else. Usually not a better place.
They can be very moody, unable to focus, or even unable to function in normal day to day activities. If it goes untreated. It only gets worse with time. This is the best explanation I can give. Hopefully a psychiatrist or counselor can give you a better answer. P.S. I like the new avatar, too.
