Opinions? The psychological motivation of someone who compulsively tells pointless lies...?

A person who just makes up crazy things in order to gain your attention when the lie has no ultimate goal or reason to it...why do people do this? Opinions?

Answer:
I was in the Army with a guy like that. He couldn't tell the truth about anything. After a while, we didn't talk to him anymore. As to why ?..I dunno...I guess he thinks his fantasy world is better than the actual one.
the reason people lie is ultimately to make themselves or their situation better than it actually is...some do it just to make others happy...in doing that it makes them a little better too...they are not secure in the relationship or with themselves...i guess if you just take the time with them and give them the time they need...you may find a good friend...at least they are not maliciously lying which is so much worse
they want to fit be part of the crew what they don't know is that the crew see threw them and then they are know as the liar but they are still part of the crew ( The worst part)
I think you answered your own question.
As one person said, and I will add some things here, but, I have found the people who are compulsive liars are usually saying whateverthey think people want to hear at the time. If that differs in different situations, that is what makes it look like a lie.
Some people may lie just for attention, however, as you point out. It is a way of drawing attention to themselves. often people forget whether a person was right or wrong, only that they contributed something.
I had a family member like that. At first I thought she wanted attention, then, they got so severe and so silly I began to think she had a screw loose and needed help.I still do. The funny thing is that for some strange reason people seem to believe these liars over and over again. Go figure.
Pathological liar...
I think it's the addiction process of shaking things up, instigating and manipulation by pressing known buttons that work

it's all about any kind of attention, even bad
