Is it possible to rid your mind of all emotions? How is it done?

Answer:
Not just emotions (feelings) but memories and random thoughts as well.

This is a matter of discipline. The mind is only a tool, it is not you (self). Like any tool, the better you control its use, the more effective it becomes.

One method (and perhaps the most common) is through meditation. This is not the only method, but it the one with the widest numbers of proponents. Meditation is best learned as a group (for support) or from a master of the method. Trying to learn from even an advanced student is like allowing a first year med student to perform brain surgery.

Even in the United States, there are many good groups which could get you started. Urban areas often have Buddhists or Zen masters who could help. If you are in an locale where such is not readily available, check out resources on-line or if this is very important to you, take some time and move to where it is available.

Other forms of mental discipline are also available, but many of these tend to be hit or miss. They may not work well for you. You might try to see what is available as references from your local public library.

Whatever method you use, it will be more effective if it blends easily with the way that your personal mind works. It may require an adjustment in lifestyle, but should not require you to drop everything and move to India or Japan.
go to sleep
Dunno guess you would have to become a Vulcan. Why would you want to rid your mind of all emotions? I been using a technique called Emotional Freedom Technique that can get rid of negative emotions and deal with all kinds of issues quickly.
If you rid your mind of all emotions you would be a cold blooded psychopath and a danger to yourself and others.
If you go to sleep your dreaming much emotion there like when people have nightmare's and they pop up in the middle of the night frightened thats emotion, so it can't be sleep. I'm guessing we're stuck with it, but if you figure it out let me know.
Get a lobotomy.

I did, and nothing bothers me anymore... *Twitch*
By concentrating the front of your mind on a mundane manual task - say, sitting cross-legged on the floor, back straight & hands resting on your knees - this allows you to free-up the rest of your mind (both concious & sub-concious) from day-to-day cares & concerns; allowing free range meditation & relaxation.

It takes some practice but the rewards of inner peace & calm are well worth the initial effort.
if you want to do it only for a moment try to sleep...
you will wake up better...
but if you have a nightmare you`ll wake up worse...
that a risk...
if its forever you can try to become a robot!
peace!
I agree with Yeti if you rid your mind of all emotion you would be capable of acts of violence etc, without having a conscience; you would also not experience good emotions such as love, humour which would be cr*p. There are self hypnosis methods for trying to get rid on negative emotions but that would be by focusing on positive emotions. Also when we feel negative it is because we are focusing on negative situations. So I dont know how you would focus on nothing because it would be very hard as the mind just naturally begins to wander.
Meditation could help you to shut off from it all.

I am not big into meditation but when things get too much for me i lay on my bed close my eyes and deep breath for a bit then to prevent my mind to wonder off I imagine a sh!t load of little balls rushing through a corridor, within the corridor there are doors and they are all open and i have to slow the balls down and prevent them from going into the doorways.
withraw away from the society... live with animals for the rest of your life!
I have done it successfully. My wife notes that I am moron devoid of emotion on a regular basis.
its not possible, because its natural and normal for the homosapien to have emotion, its what makes a person human
Hello,

(ANS) DON'T confuse the functionality of the brain or mind with the experience of the emotions or feelings. We have a body-mind, NOT just a body & not just a mind, they are not separate from each other.

**Our feelings & our emotional life are bodily sensations, experienced through our body, yes! our minds are involved in that process of course.

**The mind or brain is part of our intellectual apparatus, and heavily influences what we think about on a conscious level, but the brain controls our bodily functions on an unconscious level too at the same time.

**YES! it is entirely possible through meditation to completely still the conscious mind of ALL thoughts. A totally quiet mind is a very wonderful experience and not one that you can put into words here. Its a state quite unlike any other experience. When you have a totally still & peaceful mind time has no meaning or relevance, in true meditation you may have been sitting for 15minutes or 5 hours you wouldn't know and it wouldn't matter either. After good quality meditation its common to feel so refreshed, it can feel like you had a whole nights sleep you feel very refreshed with new energy.

**You would need to learn a form of meditation called "mind fullness" this is whats called a concentration meditation. A meditation that is designed to quiet the mind down. This is a common meditation in Buddhism.

PS:- Mind fullness & meditation is very powerful practice & so should be learned slowly and with the help of very experienced people.

Kind Regards Ivan
Yes it's possible! It's called Meditation. You need to be in a quiet area (I find the bedroom best). Lie or sit comfortably and relax your body. It may help to have soft music playing in the background. Take several deep breaths.
Now the hard bit! Close your eyes, then think about how you feel, Ok you are angry, because X did something. Now tell yourself, it's finished and not worth any more of your time. Or your sad because this or that happened, again tell yourself it's gone, it's in the past, then concentrate on the darkness behind your eye lids. Image that there is nothing but the darkness and that it is a warm and comfortable place to be! Every thought that comes into your head MUST be accepted, dismissed and replaced with the image. Eventually you should be able to do it for several minutes and if you do it before settling for the night may even find yourself falling asleep without any tossing and turning.
Give it a try! It certainly helps to get rid of the stresses before sleep, and always works for me!
i dont think its a bad question. i do it all the time.
