Why are some people against the death penalty?

Or put another way, why would a murder have the same rights as another human? Many murders will kill again if put out and keeping them in jail wastes too much tax dollars and isn't really helping anyone by keeping them in there. What's the point of keeping them alive? Should honest tax payers have to pay to keep criminals alive? If a dog kills, he is put to death, but not a human?

Answer:
Well, if a dog kills it is not put to death. Just clarifying that :).

It is put through trials, for temperament, to see if it will bite again.

With people, I do not believe it is the same. They KNOW what they are doing and have a full understanding of it. A murderer has taken another persons life, and has therefore, in my opinion, nulled his own right to one.

We would have much less crime if every town had a set of gallows, and he publicly hung every murderer and rapist.

People have the impression not too many people are found for murder, and put to death. If they SAW people getting executed for it, then yeah, I think an impression would be made.

Executions are supposed to cost more than life sentences, as they have to go through all these appeals. Do away with appeals! If you are found guilty, you are guilty. Good bye.

I don't like being callous, but this way it WORKS. It is efficient, and crime will drop.

This is not how I would want it, there would need to be some modifications, but you get the gist of it.

People don't like the idea of killing people. "Two wrongs don't make a right." Three rights make a left.

An execution is not a wrong, it is justice. YOU KILLED SOMEONE. The whole basis of our (Inefficient) legal system is JUSTICE. If you hit someone, you go to jail for a set amount of time, which is considered a fair and set amount of time.

Lets say you punch someone and get 3 years in jail.

Lets say you kill someone, and recieve 30 years.

Well... If I went up to ten people and punched them, that is equal to one life? Hell no. What about a life sentence, and I live 60 years. Then a murder is worht 20 punches.

------------------------------...
I forgot to add this...

Criminals ARE less then dogs. They lost their rights as a human, and fell into a category below animals. Humans are, in my opinion, only slightly, and minutely, the most morally important animal.

Forget testing on non willful, non consent giving, animals for research. Get a murderer. A rapist. Child Molester.

Put them through the hell millions of animals endure.

It is complete bull. A death can only justify a death. The end.
I am for the death penalty. But I believe there are a few who truly do regret their past. Their is not many but their still is a few who can change.
Other than religious convictions about the sanctity of life (which I personally don't hold), the most compelling argument against the death penalty I can think of is the possibility of convicting and killing the wrong person.

While it sucks to say after a dozen years "sorry, we made a mistake, you were innocent after all" its a lot worse to have to tell a family of a person executed. oops!
Murderers deserve to live. It's unborn babies who deserve the death penalty! (Not my personal opinion)
Its expensive to legally kill someone

Only really strange people enjoy this profession

if you want to strangle every murderer yourself, go for it

what if they didn't do it?

"thou shall not kill"... the bible blows
keeping murderes in jail helps the murderes lol

ok ok anyways.Someone has to kill the murders in a death penalty right? Ok, why would that person have the right to kill a murderer? that would only make another murderer.

and you said, whats the point of keeping them alive if they will only kill again. Many of these people cannot control their impulses, some of us are gay, some of us smoke, some of us overmasterbate, some of us play too many video games, Well some people kill, and they cannot stop EVEN if they wanted to. So honest (if they are honest they will understand this) tax payers will keep them alive since the murderes are overpowered by their lust for death.
1. Humans (even criminals) are not dogs.

2. Murder is murder...no matter who is doing the killing.

3. Death penalty cases cost about as much as keeping the criminal in jail for life. Consider that most death penalty cases drag through appeals for decades and then they sit on death row for decades. What's the point? And yes they should have a lengthy appeals process which brings me to.

4. The justice system is not perfect and is often biased and some innocent people are put to death and that's also murder...which makes all of us criminal because execution is carried out in all our names.
no death penalty is bad. if someone killed someone they shouldnt repay by being hung or soemthing cuz no one can decide who should live and who should die. even if the murderer killed someone, yeha it was wrong and he shuldnt of have done it btu still no one deserves to die not even criminals.
I am all for the death penalty, however, there is a part of me that would like to see criminals being "disciplined" in a different manner. If a person rapes another human being my opinion is that they should be raped every day for the rest of their life. The punishment should be equal to the crime. Don't give them air conditioning, cable, and three meals a day. Torture them. Put them through the hell they may have put others through. Call me morbid and inhumane, but I agree with long extruciating deaths for criminals who are found guilty of their crimes.
The bible also says an eye for an eye. In our country, the crime was a lot less when we still had the death penalty. People may differ from me, but I'd say, you'll think twice about murdering someone if you knew that you're going to be executed and not get free food and lodge at the taxpayer's expense.
The same reason they believe suicide is wrong, they think every life matters,it's not true.
The only people who deserve the death penalty are the american soldiers who kill people for money and the politicians who make the war but even for them I'm not sure
I agree 100%.I'm sick of hearing people say But the murderer is still a human being,So! What about the inocent life they took.Society cares more for the murderer than they do the victim. I look forward to the day when scientist develop a way to capture a murder victims agonizind ordeal. They can then put in the murderer and he or she can live it over and over again.Feel what the victim felt and pray for death, but it won't come...they have the right to live, there're human beings.
Because some inocent people might die because of the flaws in the system. Then, when you find out that someone wasn't the actual murder, it's too late.
If we were 100% sure of the guilty people, than it would be good.
It's a religious thing I guess.
I actually don't usually go for the death penalty because I believe dying is taking the easy way out. Death is not a punishment compared to life in prison it is actually preferred. I know I'd rather die than be locked up for rest of my life. Besides once they are dead they can no longer suffer. Everything you're asking for, atonement, expressions of sorrow, apologies or anything else all get buried right along with the person who gets the death penalty.
I completely agree with Emily. Being locked up for life can be much worse than death. And then do not forget about juridical errors. Think about the case of the Bulgarian nurses. Are you really sure they are guilty and deserve death? What if you became a lethal weapon is fate's hands? Although I think there are some exceptional cases when the death penalty moratorium can be lifted.
There are many practical issues. Here are answers to questions about the practical aspects of the system with sources listed below. And specifically you should take a look at why the death penalty is so expensive (sources)

What about the risk of executing innocent people?
124 people on death rows have been released with evidence of their innocence.

Doesn't DNA keep new cases like these from happening?
DNA is available in less than 10% of all homicides. It is not a guarantee against the execution of innocent people.

Doesn't the death penalty prevent others from committing murder?
No reputable study shows the death penalty to be a deterrent. To be a deterrent a punishment must be sure and swift. The death penalty is neither. Homicide rates are higher in states and regions that have it than in states that do not.

So, what are the alternatives?
Life without parole is now on the books in 48 states. It means what it says. It is sure and swift (see above) and rarely appealed. Life without parole is less expensive than the death penalty.

But isn't the death penalty cheaper than keeping criminals in prison?
The death penalty costs much more than life in prison, largely because of the legal process. Extra costs include those due to the complicated nature of both the pre trial investigation and of the trials in death penalty cases and appeals. There are more cost effective ways to prevent and control crime.

What about the very worst crimes?
The death penalty isn’t reserved for the “worst of the worst,” but rather for defendants with the worst lawyers. When is the last time a wealthy person was sentenced to death, let alone executed??

Doesn't the death penalty help families of murder victims?
Not necessarily. Murder victim family members across the country argue that the drawn-out death penalty process is painful for them and that life without parole is an appropriate alternative.

So, why don't we speed up the process?
Over 50 of the innocent people released from death row had already served over a decade. If the process is speeded up we are sure to execute an innocent person.

But don’t Americans prefer the death penalty as the most serious punishment?
Not any more. People are rethinking their views, given the facts and the records on innocent people sentenced to death. According to a Gallup Poll, in 2006, 47% of all Americans prefer capital punishment while 48% prefer life without parole.
