What is the fear of failing?
Answer:
I think they both play on your emotions. The fear of failing is the anxiety you have of not living up to yours or someone else's expectations. It's also the insecurity you feel mentally because you did not succeed. If you fail someone else, it's the fear of the disappointment they will feel because you let them down, and to some degree we all want to be counted on and rise to any challenge. So the fear of failing is what happens when you put yourself in a situation to feel everything I just said because no one I know volunteers for these feelings.
The fear of succeeding is just the fear of moving out of your comfort zone. You have been where you are for a while, it's familiar, it's safe, and it's comfortable. You tend to have fear/anxiety because it's the unknown. You can't really plan for it even though you have an idea of how you want it to go, and because you have only hoped to succeed that once you actually do the fears come up because you have to deal with everything that comes along with it.
Do people really fear succeeding? Or just the outcome?
Fear of failing is natural, isn't it? Who really wants to fail?
well... its hard to fail or lose... and no one wants to but... we all fail some times in our lives... it could be a failed marrage or a failed game of soccer but... it happens to everyone... you just have to make the best of it when you do!
Everybody has a comfort zone. A way of living that they have become accustomed to.
Both success and failure can take you out of that comfort zone, and so many people are afraid of both.
I was a Realtor for several years. I can't tell you how many times I heard from other Realtors something along the lines of, "But if I get too many listings think of how hard I'll have to work! I'd have to put in twice as many hours as I do now, and I'm already swamped!" My reply to them was always that this is a good thing and marks the need to hire an assistant or two. With other people doing the makework, you can focus on making even more money. The reply was always along the lines of, "But what if I hire somebody and then the market turns down a little and I have to fire them?" It's a part of doing a successful business, but the idea of it is terrifying to many people.
Anything that changes your life puts you into unknown territory, for better or for worse. And even when it's for better, we (as humans) must overcome our in-born fear of the unknown to deal with it. For most, it's easier to keep the status quo.
