Angry Face?
I don't know if anybody saw the last season of 'America's Next Top Model' where Dionne was called out for her so called 'angry face'. She stated that she didn't mean to make a face, and that she wasn't aware of it until it was pointed out to her. Well I experience the same thing, but the problem is that men are pointing out my angry face while I'm out and about. They'll say something like 'Why you look so mean?', and the funny thing is, I don't even realize I was looking mean to begin with. It's not like I have a mirror to hold in front of my face all day to check and make sure I'm not frowning. At the same time, I'm not trying to walk around with a full blown cheesy, toothy grin on my face all the time either. I'm trying my hardest to work on this, but in the meantime I fear scarring off potentially good men to date because of how I'm looking, and I don't want to do that. I'm not trying to be stand-offish, and I don't want people to think I'm mean when I'm not. Advice?
Answer:
I can't really advise you on this one, because I am guilty of the EXACT same thing. I think perhaps, initially it started from being shy as a kid. I know what you mean though about walking around with a goofy smile on your face. I have thought that a million times! What I've tried to do, is make an effort to to look "neutral" and I'm very conscious of it too. I figure if I practice it enough, I'll get the hang of it!
The thing is, most people get to know me and find out that even though I have an expression that may appear that I'm angry or mean, I'm actually just the opposite.
Hope you get some good answers!
You don't need to walk around all day smiling like the chesire cat. Try simply smiling when you make eye contact with something to let them know you are not unapproachable. Personally I don't think a man that would yell at you while you're walking down the road is someone you really wanna mess with anyway but if you find someone you like smile smile smile, your personality will do the rest.
A relaxed face is probably the best. Your "mean" face could be from worrying and stressing that you don't notice about it.
Facial expressions are NOT universal as some people may think. One person's angry face is another's friendly face. Many teenagers whose brains are undeveloped have a real difficulty in perceiving mood by facial expression. I don't know how old you are but if your under 25 it stands to reason you may have not developed that ability yet. You need to ask an adult to draw faces on paper with every mood you can think of. Practice it with them in a mirror. Sometimes people have no idea they are scowling when they think they are smiling. And stop thinking smiling is for 'herbs' (i.e. squares, corny, etc.) that's just silly. God made smiles for a reason. You use less muscles smiling then scowling or grimacing.
Angry is not a good look for you girl! What are you mad at?:"Nothing..."
I am another person that can relate. I can't count how many times I have been asked: "What's wrong?" "You okay?" "Something bothering you?" Especially if I am deep in thought or concentrating on something. Also, I have noticed that when dealing with the public, people become more serious when speaking with me as opposed to my sister (who has a bubbly personality, always happy), with her they can laugh and joke.
Because of this, I have too become very conscious of my facial expressions. I have learned that the best way to relax facial muscles is to smile with your eyes. Do you know what that means? Also, a big toothy grin is not necessary but don't do it tight-lipped smile either. It'll look fake and forced. There is a happy medium for you, just practice in front of a mirror until you find it.
