better way of expressing oneself
education and communication.
It signifys that, that person doesn't talk to anyone. Nobody talks with an advanced vocabulary
Signifies someone who's always prevaricating around the bush!
It signifies that the person is well read. When a person reads a great deal it enlarges their vocabulary exponentially.
Intelligence !
Hopefully, they will make an effort to share their 'advanced knowledge' with others instead of acting like show-offs !
It signifies that someone is well educated and a succesor at life :]
That they know a lot of big words.

Seriously, though...

I usually associate it with someone who is highly educated and someone with a love of words. But, do they know what the words mean? I had a coworker once who used lots of big words, but incorrectly. We would make a game out of trying to figure out what word he really meant--usually one that sounded somewhat similar.

Another coworker, a very intelligent and well-educated woman often used a very advanced vocabulary, sending me scurrying to the dictionary. I told her once that using vocabulary like that impeded communication, which is why I used plain English. She said she didn't care, and too bad if they didn't understand because she thought people should be better educated and that the vocabulary she used was not elitist.

So if your real question is why do people use fancy words, my answers are: they want to dominate or embarrass others, they want to assert their intellectual superiority, they love words, they are not tuned in socially to others or don't care.
The advancement of the vocublary does not really signify anything if the speaker cannot convey to the audience what it is they are saying. You have to speak in a middle ground state to really be understood. Where people of an advanced vocabulary are regularly called on by friends and collegues alike for grammatical assistance.

(it don't really matter what you know, but how you get the point across)
Well, if they are in a group of people that don't speak like that, I think it signifys that that person is not trying to be understood and doesn't care. I feel very uncomfortable around people like that. I love smart people but you don't have to speak for me to think that your intelligent. In actuality , the REAL smart people are the ones that listen.
But back to your question, other than being an odd duck , I think that they probably read a lot and have few good friends.
it could signify many things,, use of tactical grammer could defuse a situation or promote that persons perspective, or in a negative light, unnecessary use of vernacular capabilities could indeed be viewed as a vain attempt at gaining intellectual superiority of a room,,,making one look egotistical, even superficial, like a new age coffee shop hippy, that's why i usually walk the fine line of using the aged speech of the rockabilly,, whoo hoo yalls malfeasance truly knows no bounds,, what's that you trying to come down here and big boy me with your fancy speechification,,
A large vocabulary indicates someone who is intelligent and probably educated. Like it or not, these individuals are more respected. LOL Beware of those who claim to be intelligent and have a large vocabulary, then misspell words such as grammar. I am a writer, scientist, and very educated; I do have a large vocabulary. I try not to use it in casual conversation, but now and then an odd word does slip out. I don't want to impress or intimidate anyone; that is simply the way I talk.
Depends on the person. Some people simply know a lot of words and that's the way they talk. Others use a large vocabulary to make the people around them feel stupid.
