Husband is out very late.
Tells you he was with the boys.
He's never cheated and never given you any reason to doubt him.
So..you give him, "the benefit of the doubt" and believe him.

like if a guy cuts you off in traffic instead of cursing you think oh he must be late for something very important.
Benefit of the doubt means giving someone the credit without demanding a proof of their intentions. It is faith in the face value of things, irrelevant of the circumstances surrounding other evidences that might imply guilt or intentions that were nor pure or altruistically motivated.
in the absence of an evidence, it is giving the person the favor of an assumption that he is telling the truth, and that therefore you believe in him.
