Why do Americans let themselves ?

Why do americans let themselves believe that you really need 12 years of reading medical books ?
A good doctor is an experienced doctor ... not one who has read countless useless books and disected a frog or a pig ...

Answer:
I know, you really don't have to be the smartest person on earth to become a doctor.Anyone can become a doctor if you're determined and you study hard(i'm not saying reading countless books).
i don't know about the 12 year thing. but i certainly would not chose my doctor by how many books he read or by how many animals he cut open along the way. i would chose him because of experience and maybe animals don't count towards this but doctors get a lot of experience by disecting cadavers...people who've donated their bodies to science. i'm not even sure why you're asking this question.
A good doctor is also someone who is intelligent enough to know that we always need to learn. I do believe that having experience makes us more seasoned at what we do. However, times change, and continuing education keep us in the loop.
Well, I'm not in the medical field, nor am I planning to ever enter it. But I know it doesn't take 12 years of studying to become a doctor in America. It's more like 4 years of medical school, followed by the internship, followed by the residency, for a total of about 6-8 years. During this time, medical students do get a lot of practical experience in the field, so they're not spending their entire 6-8 years reading.

All of that aside, however, I think I do understand where you're coming from. My BA was in education, and I know that I learned about three times as much from practical experience in the field than I did from reading textbooks and going to class.
They need more than book smarts. They need to know how to treat people.Ive encountered some real jerks(sorry,Id like to call them something else but Im being nice).
Where on earth did you get the notion that it takes 12 years of reading medical books to become a doctor in America?
I believe its more like 4 year university, and then an applied internship/ residency .usually an 8 year process.
A good doctor is:
well studied
experienced
cares about human beings
and continues his or her education throughout their career
I think we all know older doctors who may have plenty of experience under their belt, and they do care about their patients, but they are out of the loop, and behind the times, b/c they've chosen to rely on nothing more than their own realm of experience.
Balance my friend..life in balance.
Education+ humanity+experience= a good doctor
