Why do people have a fear of being looked at by strangers?

The biggest reason is probably insecurity. Smaller ones include paranoia, timidity, social awkwardness, and fear of the unknown.
People who are insecure will generally think, when a stranger stares at them, that something is wrong with them. They go through questions in their mind about what the stranger could possibly be thinking -- is my hair too short? do they notice the pimple on my nose? are they judging me?? It tends to take very little to push them into thinking everything about them is wrong, and a stranger's stare is interpreted as something bad about themselves.
People who are paranoid generally think that a stranger staring at them wants something. Are they going to ask me for money? Are they trying to figure out the combination to my safe? How long have they been watching me? This plays along into the fear of the unknown -- if you don't know what the stranger is thinking, your mind tends to make up the worst possible thoughts.

I don't trust people. If someone I don't know looks at me, well... I might just think they're after my wallet. Then again that was assuming I had a fear of being looked at by strangers, which I don't. Now if they start following or talking to me... :p
I have this and it`s because i`m not a confident person and have low self esteem so tend to sort of try and blend into the background and not draw attention to myself,if i see a guy looking at me when i`m out i feel ill.
A glance from a stranger is fine. If they stare at me they're probably up to no good.
self esteem problems coupled with being self obsessed. essentially...which are the most common problems most of us have. they think others are judging them. if everyone realised how little others really cared, they wouldnt be so coy.
