What are some effective ways to boost self-confidence and self-esteem?

I am not very confident with myself and the way i look. It would be great if I could get some advice on how to help myself.

Answer:
if you don't like your looks, work out and build the body you want. understand however that wont change how you feel. confidence is mental not physical, just ask most any woman you know. she is always looking at herself and asking, am i fat? or does this make me look fat? or they get upset when they gain a couple of pounds, even though you cant see it. the first thing to do is to start projecting an air of confidence. like the deodorant commercial says, "don't let them see you sweat". now how do you project that air of confidence? start by thinking about things you know that you do well, be it building engines, flying planes, writing software, using a typewriter, or shoveling excrement. it doesn't matter. now you are going to build on that, by dealing with things that you do well enough, again it doesn't matter what it is. as you gain confidence in your abilities, you gain confidence in your self. you start to become a pack leader. understand though that there will be times when you will question your abilities, that is fine, just don't show it. one more thing, don't get over confident, you have to know your limitations, but you also need to push the boundaries of those limitations from time to time.

one more thing, women will tell you that confidence is very sexy.
If you're not confident in the way you look, start an exercise program. Also, join some kind of group - hiking, mountain climbing, running, etc. You'll meet people, and start to feel better about your physical appearance. Make sure you are eating healthy too - if you eat a bunch of junk you'll feel lazy and lethargic, be less likely to get out and experience new things, and as a result you will feel worse about yourself because all you do is sit around and watch tv.

Push yourself - get out of your comfort zone and start accomplishing small, challenging, but attainable goals.
start working out, that's what i found very helpful in boosting my self-confidence and self-esteem.

also try writing down a list of all your strong points/characteristics, this can help.another good thing is to write down 3 things you think you did well each day, at night, and then you'll be able to sleep happier knowing that you did good, which will help you be more confident in yourself.
get a completly new hair cut and style, buy a few new outfits, and try something new, like yoga, or pilates.
If you have a body image problem, start working out as the others have suggested. I would also suggest, dressing the part. I was a merchandiser for a Major Cookie company for 14 years. I dressed in skirts, hose and heels every day. Folks thought I was the Sale Rep or District Manager. Simply dressing "the part" can gain a great deal of respect from others, which in turn, can boost your self esteem.
In addition to the other advice regarding exercise and eating right, you also need to consider the superficial aspect of you in clothes, hair, and make-up (if you're female).

Your overall looks underneath the clothes is one thing, but you will also feel good looking good in the clothes you wear.

We all have comfortable clothes that are not too flattering. Although our bodies are not perfect, wearing the right kind of clothes that flatter our forms goes a long way in making us look better and feel better.

I know I'm not perfect, but the things I wear makes people wish they had my body. Little do they know, that I'm far from being perfect underneath. But that's my little secret and I don't mind my imperfections. If you don't achieve your perfect body, don't hate yourself. Just love what you have.

I can't tell by your name if you're male/female, but hair (and makeup) could also boost your overall self-esteem.

If you aren't any good at what to do with your hair/clothes/make-up, find someone who may help, i.e. friends, family members. Find someone who is going to be honest and genuinely helpful.

And if you're on a budget, there's plenty of outlets and discount-type stores with great price tags and fashionable for today's time - Ross, Burlington Coat Factory, TJ Maxx, Kohl's.

Good luck with your new self-image.

PS. keep good dental hygiene, as a beautiful smile and fresh breath is important.
Know that most everyone else around you doesn't know, on a fundamental level, what the heck they are doing in this life either.
Do stuff that u like doing..like sports or swimming or dancing or playing an instrument...ect.it will boost ur confidence.. or u can finish stuff that u never got to finish like a book or anything else... Always think of wat u want...
