Painting stuff on my nails doesn't work; what else can I try to stop chewing on and fidgeting with them?
It's not so much a truly nervous habit as it is something I do when bored or deep in thought. I either nibble the nails or peel them or play with them. If the awful-tasting stuff is on them, they don't go in my mouth but I still fidget with them. I'm not a kid but still have this habit I can't break. Please don't suggest hypnosis as it goes against my beliefs. I'd most love to hear what's worked for you, of course.
Answer:
ok, I know how you feel. I chewed my nails and cuticles for years and years. The icky polish didn't work for me either.
It might sound overly simple, but what worked for me was really REALLY deciding not to let myself chew on them anymore. I didn't usually realize I was chewing on them until I made myself pay attention.
I carried hard candy or gum for a couple weeks, anytime I caught myself chewing my nails I made myself stop and chewed candy or gum to fill the chewing habit.
I also carry a finger nail file set in my purse. Anytime I get the urge to gnaw on them I file them instead. This has replaced my bad habit with a new habit.
I hope you find something that works for you!
Smoking worked for me, but I wouldn't recommend it.
And after I stopped smoking, I picked up the nail chewing habit again.
I wonder if one of those squishy balls would help?
I have the same problem. I haven't quit, but it's because I haven't made the effort. I had a few of my nails grow back at one point when I broke the fingers and had them in a mini-cast like thing. I suggest wrapping the nail in a band-aid. You can't get at it.
