Is Asperger's syndrome hereditary?
Answer:
From my personal experience it is hereditary. Once your child gets the diagnosis of Asperger's, you start looking at all of her quirky relatives and realize that they have it as well. I also believe it is present from birth. I knew from the moment my daughter was born that something was different about her. Everyone commented on it and blamed the way I raised her. She was a lot like her father.
Being young and in the dark about AS over 20 years ago, I just thought my husband was the strong, silent type. Of course now I realize he had AS as do many in his family. My daughter is the light of my life--highly intelligent to the point of genius, gentle, and a wonderful person. If she has children she will be know how to raise them. However, being married to an Aspie is a difficult path if you aren't ready for it!
Yes, at least some types of Asperger's is hereditary, I don't have a doubt.
Asperger syndrome (AS) is a neurobiological disorder that is part of a group of diagnoses called "autistic spectrum disorders." The term "autistic spectrum" refers to a range of developmental disabilities that includes autism as well as other disorders with siuses. There seems to be a hereditary component to AS, and research indicates that in some cases AS may be associated with other mental health disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder. Researchers are also looking into whether environmental factors that affect brain development might play a role in the condition.
No, it's not. It may have something to do with the 'end' of pregnancy and the delivery ... Asberger's Syndrome is 'similar to' Autism, but the people with it tend to be HIGHLY INTELLIGENT with an 'extended attention span' so that if they are doing something they'll 'work at it until it's done' and won't 'hear' anyone trying to call them. Sometimes you have to give them a 'shake' (hold their shoulder and move it back and forth an inch or two) ... but if you have it, don't worry about your children getting it ... or worry that you 'gave it' to a child if you have a child with it.
No it is not hereditary
it is termed as a pervasive developmental disorder.
what i read up was it was much like depression and bipolar disorders.
Two references are declined to confirm that it is definitely hereditary, however, they see from researches that there might be a hereditary component.

Wikipedia said nothing about it being hereditary
Yes, its definitely hereditary. The specific gene that is the cause of aspergers and autism has not been identified as of yet, but it will be soon.
The laws of heredity and genetics applies to aspergers. If your father has it, then you have a really good chance of having it. If your mother also has it, then you are pretty much a sure bet for having it.
Males are more likely to have autism (including aspergers) because females have an X chromosome that males do not. This gives them a sort of genetic immunity. However, females do get aspergers, its just a lot more rare.
There is also some speculation about autism being caused by environmental issues as well. In particular, they speculate that mercury from vaccines and fillings trigger the gene that is responsible for autism. However, I am not aware that any of that has been proven.
So basically, its not a good idea for aspies to have children.
One other thing is that there is no minimum IQ for having autism. High functioning autistics are those with average or better IQ's. Aspies are high functioning autistics but generally have IQ's well above average. Low functioning autistics are generally what people maintain as the stereotypical autistic.
Sadly, yes. I have one HFA son and one Aspie, and my fiance (not their father) is an Aspie. We've ruled out having kids because they're almost certain to be autistic as well.
