Is there a link between brilliance and insanity?

Do genius and insanity tend to run hand-in-hand?

Answer:
Yes and no. I think.. it goes both ways. What makes a person brilliant? They take chances, they do things not normally accepted by society. They excel at whatever they're brilliant at, and continue in the same vein until they perfect their art - to their own eyes. In many cases, they lead reclusive or private lives. Does the reclusiveness lead to insanity? Often times, brilliance is not discovered until the person is dead, but their work remains.

On the other hand, an insane person will also do things not normally accepted by society. They may "suck" at something, until they're dead.. at which a critic will pull out their remaining work and point out how "brilliant" something is, and the rest of society buys in.

I think sometimes there's a link, and other times, it's just plain dumb luck.
Yes,I Do!
i wouldn't say they run hand in hand but i do believe you have to be a "little" crazy to be a genius
Try another saying "I am so smart it hurts"
absolutely
Yes, there is a link. There is a fine line between the two, though. Insanity is brilliance to the point at which it is used to deal with mental instabilites and unreal issues.
Sort of. Brilliance comes from the ability to think outside ordinary norms. This provides new insights, which can then be applied to a given problem to creat original solutions. Because the solutions come from outside the established lines of thought, they are considered brilliant, genius, revolutionary.

This thinking outside the norms is similar to (some types of) insanity. Indeed, insanity might basically be defined as a perspective that is outside the norms or everyday perspective of society.

Thus, the two are closely related. Not to say that that geniuses are more inclined toward insanity -- there are plenty of amazingly intelligent and creative people who are not insane -- but maybe there is some mental proclivity that can lead to both.
