Instant REM cycle. Please help!?

Ever since summer started all I've wanted to do is stay up all night. One night I didn't sleep at all and it was awesome. The sky was covered in clouds and I saw the sun rise, there's nothing better than biking at 5 in the morning. Problem was I felt like crap for the rest of the day, and the next night when I tried to go to sleep I found it very difficult and extremely depressing. I thought to my self that nothing would make me happier than be able to function without sleep. Then I read this article about Napoleon and how he only slept 1 hour a night because he was able to go right into the REM cycle, which is the deepest form of sleep. I checked the internet and It said that this kind of sleep is avaliable for anyone who knows how. I remembered one time I only slept 3 hours one night and woke up completely energized, so I know it's possible. Only thing was the websites wouldn't tell me how to do it. Can someone help me with this? Sleeping is so awful now I feel like crying.

Answer:
..It's not nice to mess with Mother Nature.

Your brain needs to be "on standby," regular periods of very low use (sleep) in order for the brain to catch up on washing out the byproducts of daily thought. The sensation of the accumulation of these byproducts is you know as mental fatigue. The brain wants to stop working for a while, so it can clear all this stuff out. Without sleep, your brain will soon be so overloaded that it can't function normally and eventually it will shut down. Apparently, you've experienced the early stages of this first-hand. It's not pleasant.

One thing you can do to get by with less sleep is meditation, which performs the same cleansing function as sleep - only better. Done properly two episodes of 20 minutes of meditation are the equivalent of three hours sleep. So you invest 40 minutes so you can get by on 3-4 hours a night.
